Lifting His Head
The boy lifted his head, confused by an unusual scent. A faint smell of something burning lingered in the air, but no one else seemed to notice.

His friends continued to chat and laugh, oblivious to the tension in the air. His stomach churned as he watched the bus driver’s white-knuckled grip on the wheel. Ten minutes had already passed, and with no way off the bus, he felt trapped.
Boarding The School Bus
It was a regular Wednesday afternoon at 3 PM when 10-year-old Jordan Markson boarded the school bus, making his way through the quiet streets of Elgin, a small town just outside Chicago. A creature of habit, Jordan followed his daily routine without fail.

However, what started as an uneventful ride home quickly morphed into a chilling experience that would stay with him forever. Little did he know, this ordinary journey would soon take a turn into the unexpected.
A Regular Afternoon
What started as a regular afternoon for young Jordan quickly turned into a nerve-wracking experience as he made his way home on the school bus. He settled into his usual seat, the second row from the front, and began scrolling through his iPad.

Suddenly, a pungent smell filled the air, drawing his attention. Little did he know, his quick thinking and courage in that moment would soon earn him the title of hero.
Seat On The School Bus
At exactly 3 PM, 10-year-old Jordan took his usual seat on the school bus, staring out the window as it rolled down the familiar streets of Elgin. Everything seemed normal, just another ride home after school.

But soon, Jordan noticed an unusual smell drifting from the front of the bus. The odor grew stronger, and his concern deepened. Curiously, he leaned toward his seatmate, Margo, and whispered to her, wondering if she noticed it too.
Favorite Video Game
As Jordan stared out the window, lost in thoughts of his favorite video game, a strange, unpleasant smell suddenly caught his attention. It was unlike anything he had ever smelled before—sharp and overpowering, almost like something burning.

His nose wrinkled in discomfort as the odor filled the air, its intensity making it hard to ignore. Jordan glanced around, wondering if anyone else on the bus had noticed the strange scent that seemed to cling to the air.
Chatty
Jordan looked around at the other passengers. Some were chatting animatedly, while others sat in silence, lost in their own thoughts, unaware of the unsettling scent that lingered in the air.

Shifting in his seat, the smell grew stronger, and his heart began to race. Something about it felt off. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Margo, sitting beside him, might sense something unusual too.
Shaky Voice
Jordan glanced at Margo, his voice shaky as he asked, "Do you smell that, Margo? Something feels off." The young girl, only 11, nodded silently, her expression mirroring his concern.

Margo wrinkled her nose, uneasy, and looked at him, her eyes wide. The strange odor grew stronger, lingering in the air like a foreboding presence, making both of them tense with apprehension. They exchanged a glance, their shared worry deepening as the unsettling scent surrounded them.
The Strange Smell
Before the children had a chance to comment on the strange smell, the bus came to a sudden stop. The force threw everyone forward, causing books and backpacks to scatter through the air. Chaos spread as the passengers were jolted in their seats.

Jordan clutched the seat in front of him, his hands tense and pale, staring ahead in confusion. His mind raced with questions. What was going on?
Growing Unsettling
The young passengers' nerves were on edge as the bus ride grew increasingly unsettling. The tension hit its peak when the vehicle abruptly came to a halt, sending several children stumbling and crying out in shock.

Jordan’s pulse quickened as his gaze shifted toward the front of the bus. There, the bus driver, Jenny Broady, was fighting to regain control. Something was seriously wrong with the bus.
The Bus Driver
Mrs. Broady, the bus driver, was desperately trying to regain control of the vehicle. Her face, pale with panic, showed clear signs of confusion and fear. She slammed the brakes once the bus passed the intersection, causing it to lurch to a sudden stop.

Her hands shook as they clutched the steering wheel, her foot poised above the brake pedal. The screeching noise of rubber scraping against the asphalt reverberated throughout the bus, adding to the tension of the moment.
Losing Control
The terrified bus driver looked at her student passengers through the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were as wide as saucers. "Is everyone okay?" she stammered, her voice trembling.

"Everyone, stay in your seats! I've got this under control!" Jenny shouted, her voice slurred and eyes unfocused as she swayed unsteadily to the side of the road.
Frantic Children
The children were not paying attention to her. They were all screaming and looking out the window trying to see what had happened. She tried to control her passengers but it was impossible.

Jordan's attention was no longer on her. The bizarre smell had become overpowering, nearly suffocating him. He knew he had to do something, and fast.
Cause For Concern
Jordan reached into his backpack and pulled out his emergency cell phone, a gift from his parents for situations just like this. His trembling fingers dialed 911, and he held the phone to his ear, his heart pounding in his chest.

"911, what's your emergency?" a calm voice on the other end of the line asked.
Calling For Help
The boy was stuck for words and didn’t know what to say at first. Then his voice kicked in. “Hello, my name is Jordan, I’m a student at Elgin Middle School,”

"There's something wrong with my school bus!" Jordan blurted out, his voice quivering. "We stopped suddenly, and there's a weird smell, and the bus driver looks scared!"
Staying Calm
The dispatcher reassured Jordan and asked for his location. As he provided the details, the bus lady continued her attempts to regain control of the situation.

She asked Jordan questions about the bus driver and if they had been in an accident. The smell grew stronger, and Jordan began to cough, tears welling up in his eyes.
Quick Thinking
Jordan knew something was terribly wrong which is why he had to act fast. His heart pounded in his chest as he fumbled for his emergency cell phone and dialed 911, his fingers trembled with fear and determination.

The operator's voice filled his ear, and he stammered, "Th-the bus number is 021, and we're on Cos Street. Our driver is acting really weird!"
That’s A Good Boy
The operator was kind and knew she was dealing with children. "Stay on the line with me," the dispatcher instructed Jordan. "Help is on the way." Jordan nodded, his breaths coming in shallow gasps.

The seconds felt like hours as he listened to the dispatcher's soothing voice on the other end of the line. Meanwhile, Mrs. Broady managed to pull the bus to the side of the road, and the children exchanged worried glances.
Waiting For Help
As Jordan relayed this critical information, a collective hush fell over the bus. His peers waited and watched outside. A few other drivers stopped next to the bus to see what happened.

Jordan held the phone in his hand. The operator assured him that help was on the way, but time felt like an eternity as the minutes ticked by. Would they find them in time?
They Found Us
Finally, the distant wail of sirens pierced the air, growing steadily louder. Relief washed over Jordan as he heard the approaching rescue. Help was nearby.

The dispatcher assured him that help was close, and Jordan relayed the information to Mrs. Broady, who had also noticed the strange smell. Did she know what it was caused by?
Help Is Here
Within minutes, firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene, their flashing lights and urgent voices filling the air. They quickly assessed the situation, checking the bus's ventilation system and evacuating the children to safety.

Jordan was one of the first to step off the bus, his heart still racing. It was a relief to breathe some fresh air. The children waited on the pavement for further instruction.
What Happened
More sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with each passing second. There was a detective on the way to take a report. It was a serious issue as so many children were involved.

A police cruiser pulled up behind the halted bus, and Officer Charlton approached Jenny Broady, who was now stumbling out of her seat with glassy eyes.
More To This
Officer Charlton was strict and solemn. She didn’t have time for any games. She jumped onto the bus. It was just her and Mrs. Broady alone on the bus.

"Ma'am, I need you to step out of the vehicle," Officer Charlton instructed firmly, a hint of concern in his voice. The bus driver swallowed suspiciously and slowly moved out of her seat.
A Rude Woman
Jenny swayed dangerously as she exited the bus. Was she disorientated from the vehicle issue? Officer Charlton thought that something was wrong, her breath smelled funny. She administered a sobriety test.

Jordan, still clutching his phone, watched in awe and relief as the officer's expression shifted from concern to stern disbelief. Jenny had failed the test – she was intoxicated.
The Report
As firefighters investigated the source of the mysterious odor, Jordan was interviewed by the authorities. The boy said, “The smell was burning my nose,” and held his hand over his face.

He recounted the events leading up to his call to 911, his voice unwavering as he detailed the unsettling smell and the bus's abrupt stop. The emergency responders praised his quick thinking and courage.
Burning Parts
The officers at the scene inspected the bus. They opened the hood, and everything was fine. They checked the wheels and everything was also fine. But the burning smell was still prevalent in the bus.

It was only when they called the mechanic to inspect, that they discovered it was from the brakes. She had hit the brakes so hard that they burned and wore away at the tire.
Bad Driver
The gravity of the situation was now apparent to everyone on the bus. Mrs. Broady had taken a huge risk by drinking while driving.

Children whispered anxiously to one another, and Jordan's hands trembled as he relayed the developments to the 911 operator. The officer placed Jenny under arrest, ensuring the safety of the children aboard.
Safe And Sound
With Jenny in custody, another bus driver arrived on the scene to safely escort the children to their respective homes. They were happy to be over with the whole ordeal.

It was now past 5 p.m. and the children and their parents were frantic with worry. Jordan watched as the backup driver guided the bus away from the chaos that had unfolded.
Our Little Hero
News of Jordan's quick thinking and bravery quickly spread through Elgin earning him accolades from his schoolmates and teachers alike. He became even more popular just for being vigilant.

His parents, overcome with pride, hugged him tightly when they finally reunited at home. But would this issue change anything about the American school transportation system?
School Concern
In response to this harrowing incident, the school district wasted no time implementing new safety measures. They had a few alternatives to monitor the children’s transport which was a buddy system.

Effective immediately, a backup driver would accompany each school bus on its afternoon route, ensuring the safety of every child on board. Was this an effective remedy for addicted adults?
Strong Senses
Today, Elgin School celebrates Jordan Markson, the young hero who, when faced with danger, rose to the occasion and averted a potential tragedy. He became a poster boy for health and safety in his youth.

To this day, the town stands united in gratitude for his courage, reminding us all that heroes can emerge from the unlikeliest of places, even a school bus ride home.
