Why You Should Not Let Grandparents Watch your Kids for Now

Due to the Coronavirus, schools and many businesses are closing. If you will be working out of your home for self-quarantining, it’s really difficult to get anything done with your kids running everywhere.

If you have your kids’ grandparents living nearby, it might be tempting to call them to help out with your children. Unfortunately, this is not a good idea due to the virus.

It has become very clear that the Coronavirus is very dangerous for older people and those whose immune systems have been compromised. These are very stressful times so asking your parents to help out with the kids is a really bad idea.

The leading way this virus spreads is when a person shows symptoms then there is evidence that they can be contagious during the incubation period.

The incubation period is between when the time they caught the virus and when they started feeling sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Even though your kids may not show symptoms from the virus, they may still be able to spread it to their grandparents.

A professor from the University of British Columbia’s Department of Pediatrics and infectious disease specialist explained that kids have milder symptoms of COVID-19.

In many cases in that age group, they are usually under-reported as their cases are so mild that parents usually blow off getting their kids tested, thinking it’s just a common cold. On top of that, kids are not known for washing their hands so the transmission of the virus is quite high.

Taking Measures to Protect the Elderly

As of date, officials are setting further precautions to protect the elderly from contracting the virus.

As of March 14th, Quebec Premier François Legault urged people over 70 to stay at home until further notified. A grocery store in Iceland has designated early opening hours solely for older customers staring on March 17th. Older people can get supplies without being exposed to crowds.

So, even though it’s hard to keep grandparents away, even when they are eager to help out, it would be at their own risk.

The Coronavirus has caught everyone off guard. It’s a difficult time but everyone must work together to get through this as quickly as possible. In order to keep the rate of deaths down and have those who have contracted the disease turn around and heal, it takes steps that nobody expected.

Scientists and researchers are working around the clock to come up with a vaccine and looking for alternatives to prevent the spreading of the virus.

Please pay close attention to doctors, scientists, and officials to keep the virus at bay where it can be. Make sure your kids’ hands are washed and explain to them why this is not the time to visit their grandparents.
