Believed She Had Secured Her Peace
Jolene Anderson believed she had secured her peace for the twilight years, assured that the nursing home she meticulously selected would provide solace. Years of diligent saving and thorough research had led her to this supposedly ideal haven.

She formed bonds with fellow residents and staff, relishing in the camaraderie and the array of activities on offer. However, her tranquility was abruptly shattered by unsettling news—she was suddenly informed that she had to leave.
Under The Warm Rays Of The Sun
Under the warm rays of the sun, Jolene found solace on the patio, engaged in conversation with her friend Martha. Their peaceful moment was shattered when the head nurse approached, requesting a private conversation. With a sinking heart, Jolene complied, trailing behind the nurse into the building.

In a somber tone, the nurse revealed that a new state policy mandated the nursing home to accommodate more patients, necessitating additional deposits for existing residents to retain their spots. Jolene's world crumbled as she absorbed the devastating news.
Attached To The Nursing Home
Attached to the nursing home, Jolene cherished her snug and inviting room, as well as the camaraderie shared with staff and fellow residents. The prospect of bidding farewell to her cherished companions and familiar environment felt overwhelmingly distressing.

Despite her efforts to reason with the nurse, Jolene's pleas fell on deaf ears. With only a week's notice to vacate her room and secure alternative accommodation, she refused to succumb to despair, determined to fight against this unjust decree.
Embarking On A Frantic Quest
With no recourse, Jolene embarked on a frantic quest over the following days to secure a new nursing home. Yet, to her dismay, she discovered that all the reputable facilities were at capacity, while those with vacancies failed to meet her standards.

Faced with this bleak reality, Jolene felt utterly helpless, her lifelong savings seemingly squandered as her plans unraveled before her eyes. Despair began to consume her, leaving her feeling isolated and adrift. Little did she realize, an unseen benefactor stood ready to offer assistance.
Facing A Bleak Reality
As Jolene faced the bleak reality of her situation, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of a call from her son. Upon learning of the predicament, he vowed to take action, promising retribution for the injustice she endured.

Reluctant to burden her son with her troubles, Jolene typically avoided sharing her concerns. However, the severity of the circumstances compelled her to confide in him. The ingenious plan he presented filled her with immense relief, spreading a wide grin across her face.
Jumping Ahead Two Weeks Later
Jump ahead two weeks later, as Jolene's deadline loomed. Accompanied by her son, Adam, they entered the nursing home to gather her belongings. While most anticipated Jolene's departure with a solemn expression or tearful farewell, she greeted the moment with a radiant smile.

Perplexity gripped the staff as they observed an unexpected sight: rather than packing her belongings for departure, Jolene was unpacking, returning items to her room that she had previously removed. The air buzzed with curiosity as they puzzled over this peculiar turn of events. What could possibly be unfolding?
Baffled By Jolene’s Defiance
The staff, baffled by Jolene's defiance, insisted she adhere to the departure mandate. However, she stood her ground, steadfast in her refusal to comply. Frustrated, the staff sought recourse from management, unaware of the revelation awaiting them.

As the news from management reached the head nurse, her complexion drained of color, her eyes widening in shock. Turning towards Adam, she began to stammer out apologies. It became evident that they were unaware of his identity, prompting a wave of confusion and disbelief among the staff.
Life Had Been Woven With Rich Experiences
Jolene Anderson's life had been a tapestry woven with rich experiences and remarkable achievements. By the time she reached the ripe age of eighty, she had checked off nearly every item on her bucket list.

From traversing the globe and immersing herself in diverse cultures to indulging in her passions and hobbies, Jolene embraced life with fervor and zest. Each moment was cherished, every memory a treasure, as she savored the richness of her journey.
Reflecting On Her Life’s Journey
Reflecting on her life's journey, Jolene basked in a profound sense of fulfillment and contentment, reassured by the knowledge that she had lived each moment to the fullest. For over sixty years, she had been deeply enamored with a man named Harrell.

Their love story began in high school, where they had discovered an instant connection that blossomed into an enduring romance. Following their education, they exchanged vows and embarked on a shared odyssey, their hearts intertwined in a lifelong bond.
A Snug Abode To Call Home
They discovered a snug and reasonably priced abode to call home, where they crafted an abundance of cherished memories together. Through the passing years, their connection deepened, and they were blessed with the arrival of a son, Adam.

As a family of three, they reveled in a life adorned with love, laughter, and tenderness. Since welcoming Adam into their lives, Jolene's days fell into a delightful rhythm. She found immense joy in nurturing her son, witnessing his growth and marveling at each milestone he achieved.
Something Lurking Around The Corner
With a supportive husband, a cozy home, and a stable job, Jolene didn't regret a single moment of the past few years. However, little did she know that her life was about to take an unexpected turn, and everything she knew and loved would be uprooted.

Jolene was unaware that a major life-changing event was lurking around the corner, ready to shake up her routine and challenge her in ways she never thought possible. When Adam turned twenty, he decided to leave his hometown to pursue his dreams.
Growing Up And Moving Out
He was ambitious and eager to explore the world. Jolene and Harrell were proud of him and wished him all the best. Meanwhile, they enjoyed their quiet life in their small town, spending time with friends and family and taking care of each other.

As time went by, Jolene and Harrell grew older, but they remained happy and content. They had each other, and that was all that mattered. They reminisced about their past adventures and looked forward to the future.
Together Until The End
Jolene and Harrell had faced many challenges together and had always been each other's support system. However, one day, tragedy struck. Harrell passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of seventy-nine.

Although Jolene knew that her husband's time was coming, the news was still devastating. She felt lost and alone without him. The memories of their time together flooded her mind, and she couldn't help but feel like a part of her was missing.
Lonely Without Him
The days seemed longer, and the nights were quiet and lonely. She struggled to come to terms with the fact that she had to face life without him. The once vibrant and lively house now felt empty and dull. Jolene tried to keep herself busy, but nothing seemed to fill the void that Harrell's absence had left behind.

Jolene was feeling lost without her soulmate. She had shared everything with him, every joy and every sorrow.
Left Alone
Now, she was left alone in a big, empty house that was full of memories from a bygone era. Every night, she tossed and turned, unable to rest easy without him. She missed the sound of his voice, his touch, and his comforting presence. It was as if a part of her had been ripped away.

One day, Adam decided to pay her a visit. He had been worried about her ever since her soulmate passed away.
A Check In
But when he saw her, he was shocked by the state she was in. She looked tired, haggard, and lost. Her once vibrant spirit had been dampened by grief and loneliness. Adam knew he had to do something to help her, to bring some light back into her life.

Adam was concerned about Jolene's mental health, as she had been living alone in her house for a while. He tried to persuade her to move out, but she was hesitant to give up her home.
Clinging Onto Memories
Jolene was an emotional person, and the memories she had in the house were precious to her. She had spent many happy moments there with her loved ones, and it was the only place that made her feel safe and secure.

Adam, on the other hand, was worried about her well-being and wanted her to be happy and healthy. He knew that living alone for too long could have a negative impact on her mental health. Both Adam and Jolene cared for each other and wanted the best for one another.
Reluctance
Despite her initial reluctance, Jolene eventually agreed to sell her home and find a new place to live where she could be more connected to others. She was determined to find the perfect place, one that would allow her to maintain her independence while also providing her with the community and support she craved.

To help her in her search, Jolene enlisted the help of Adam. Together, they scoured listings and visited countless properties, hoping to find the right fit.
Finding A New Home
But despite all their efforts, they couldn't seem to find a place that felt like home. Jolene was beginning to feel discouraged, wondering if she would ever find the right place to live.

Meanwhile, Adam was determined to keep looking, convinced that the perfect home was out there somewhere. Little did they know their search would lead them down a path they never would have expected. Adam and Jolene had been searching for a suitable place for Jolene for a long time.
Needed Care And Support
They wanted a place where she could receive the care and support she needed while also being surrounded by a welcoming community. After months of research and visits, they finally stumbled upon a place called Albuquerque Smiles.

It had everything they were looking for - a caring and experienced staff, well-equipped facilities, and a warm and friendly atmosphere. Jolene felt a sense of relief and excitement wash over her as she envisioned making this place her forever home.
Unexpected Events
Little did she know that unexpected events were about to unfold, and she was about to face some challenges she never could have anticipated.

Jolene had been struggling to sell her house for months. But finally, she managed to find a buyer who offered her a fair price. She was relieved to have the burden of maintaining the house off her shoulders, and she decided to keep a few sentimental items to furnish her new place.
A Funny Feeling
As she settled into her new home, she felt a sense of excitement. For the first time in a long time, she wouldn't have to eat alone. She looked forward to getting to know the other residents.

Over the next few weeks, things started looking up for the elderly woman. She was the happiest she had been ever since her husband had passed away. She was getting along well with another resident named Martha. But there was something insidious hiding in plain view. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
A Change In Behavior
Jolene tried to brush it off, thinking that maybe she was just paranoid. But the feeling of unease persisted, and she couldn't ignore it any longer. Jolene's life took an unexpected turn a few months after she moved into her new residence.

During the daytime, everything seemed perfectly normal. However, as soon as the sun set and darkness engulfed the place, an eerie atmosphere set in, the other residents, including Marth, who seemed fine during the day, transformed into something else altogether during the night.
A Curfew
To maintain order, a mandatory curfew was imposed, requiring all inhabitants to retreat to their rooms by 8 P.M. Initially, Jolene didn't think much of it - most nursing homes had curfews. But then she made the mistake of asking around.

During the day, Jolene asked some of the other residents about what they did when the lights went out, but she saw the look on their faces. They were hiding something and didn't want to talk about what happens after curfew. It sent dread creeping up her body.
A Disturbing Sound
Jolene cooled off after a few days. She forgot about the strange behavior of the other residents, but that was until she heard a distressing sound one night, which sent shivers down her spine.

Jolene was a person who usually slept soundly through the night, but on this particular night, she was wide awake and sitting up in her bed. She had the TV on, but it was turned down low so as not to disturb her neighbors. Suddenly, she heard some commotion outside her window in the courtyard.
Raised Voices
At first, she couldn't make out what was being said, but as she listened more closely, she could hear raised voices. Even though she knew it wasn't right to eavesdrop, Jolene turned down the volume of her TV even further and strained to hear what was being said.

She heard a nurse having a heated discussion with a man. But she didn't recognize his voice, who was he? And did he only come out after dark?
Remembering The Conversation
Jolene could barely make out what the two were talking about, but she caught words like, "can't afford it anymore" and "It's a business." Were the words just previews of a looming threat to come?

Jolene eventually fell asleep, but she never forgot the conversation and decided to ask the other residents about it. But just a few days later, she would get some news that would change her life forever.
Asking Around
The next day, Jolene decided to ask around the nursing home. First, she asked the other residents about the man she'd heard. Most of them refused to answer her questions until Martha told her that one man could.

His name was Phillip, and he was the oldest resident there. He had also been there the longest, so he knew more about the place than anyone else. He told Jolene that he knew who she was describing, but she wasn't going to like the truth.
The Owner
Philip told Jolene that the man she was describing had to have been the owner of the nursing home. He stopped by from time to time, but he preferred to stick to the shadows and observe the unseen.

Unfortunately, he wasn't the most caring man. No one knew why he owned a nursing home when he seemed to have a disdain for the elderly. Alarm bells went off in her head as she remembered what he had said.
Foreshadowing
Jolene kept her wits about her as she remembered the hushed words that the owner had said the previous night. She knew that it was a foreshadowing of what was to come. All she could do was brace herself for what came next.

She started asking questions about the future of the nursing home to the staff. But it seems that she should have kept quiet. Just a week later, a nurse came in with devastating news for the elderly woman.
Unfortunate News
Jolene and Martha were soaking up some sun rays when one afternoon the head nurse, Jackie, came out to greet them. But she had a serious look on her face. "Martha, I need to talk to you in private," She said.

Jolene knew that it couldn't be good, but she followed her inside anyway. Once inside, Jackie said, "I know you've been asking around about the owner of the property and the future of this place. You need to stop." But Jolene wasn't going to back down.
Standing Up For Herself
Jolene couldn't believe what she was hearing. She was apparently sewing seeds of discord between residents and faculty. But the head nurse didn't know that Jolene wouldn't back down so easily.

She stood up by herself, but it would be to her own detriment. After telling the nurse that she wouldn't stop, things escalated. Jackie informed her that she would have to ask her to leave. The reason didn't sound very concrete.
Being Thrown Out
Jolene nearly burst into tears, hearing that she would have to leave or pay another deposit to stay. It was because the facility was being sold to the state, and more desperate people would be given her room.

Jolene couldn't believe it. The whole thing sounded like blackmail. She argued, but it was no use. She was being thrown out of the last place she had. But she had no idea what would happen next.
Given Notice
The nurse gave Jolene notice. She would have a month to find a new place before being kicked out. But she wouldn't stand for it. She knew that there was one person that could help her. Her son was the last person she could turn to.

She picked up her phone and frantically called Adam. She explained everything to her son. She thought that he would offer up a guest room or maybe pay the deposit. But what he did made her rethink her relationship with him.
Ending The Call
After explaining everything to Adam, he was speechless. She didn't hear anything except, "I gotta go," after an awkward silence. He ended the call and left Jolene all alone once again. She couldn't believe her own son would do this to her.

She sat alone in her thoughts. She knew that she would have to find a new place to live and quickly if she didn't want to end up on the street. But she was unaware of what was going on behind the scenes.
A Plan
A few days later, Adam finally reached out and called her back. "Mom, Don't worry. I solved your problem. I contacted the owner," he said confidently. He explained his plan to her, and she couldn't help but smile. All she had to do was wait two weeks.

She had to bide her time until the deadline approached. She couldn't wait to see the look on the head nurse's face when she found out what her son had done. She clearly didn't know who Adam was.
A Final Confrontation
Fast forward two weeks later, and Adam came by to visit Jolene. He was going to be there to help deliver the news to the head nurse, but she thought that he was there to help Jolene move out.

They walked down to her room, but instead of packing things up, they unpacked even more things into her room, things that were against regulation. From a small refrigerator to a microwave, Jolene was getting it all, but Jackie tried intervening.
Day Of The Deadline
"Jolene. Today is your deadline, and why are these appliances in your room? They aren't allowed," she said sternly to Jolene, but she was ready. "Well, these appliances are allowed now. The owner told me that they were fine. As for me leaving, the owner has said that I can stay here free of charge."

Jackie's face went red, "I'll have to verify this," She said before hurrying to the phone. A crowd had gathered outside of Jolene's room to find out what was going on.
A New Owner
After five minutes, Jackie headed back to the room and said, "Well, the place is under new ownership. I don't know why no one told me, but still, once he comes around, we'll see what he has to say about you," Jackie said in an annoyed tone. But she was falling for Jolene's trap.

"But the new owner is already here, and I doubt he appreciates you speaking to the residents like this," Adam piped up. The head nurse looked as confused as ever, but then it clicked.
Not Laughing Anymore
Jackie realized that Adam was referring to himself in the third person. It was clear that he was the new owner. When he heard about Jolene's struggles, he decided to buy the place from the greedy owner who just wanted money.

This meant that now the nursing home could go in a new direction. It was already almost perfect. Now that the owner was gone and Jackie was put in her place, things would be perfect for Jolene. She would never have to worry again, thanks to her son.
