Gabrielle reached her breaking point. With her mother due to arrive any moment to babysit, she dreaded the implications. Buttons, her puppy, lingered with a sorrowful gaze, as if sensing Gloria's impending visit.
Concealing a small camera in a potted plant, Gabrielle refused to remain in the dark any longer. She couldn't shake the unsettling thought that Gloria might be harming Buttons.
Dinner Plans
Gabrielle and her husband, Chris, had plans for a dinner out with friends that evening, but she couldn't shake the nagging thoughts. Whenever Gabrielle questioned Gloria about Buttons' odd behavior, her mother insisted she was clueless.

The remainder of the night dragged on painfully. Gabrielle attempted to join in her friends' laughter, but her heart wasn't in it. She urged her husband to leave early. "I don't want to keep my mother up too late," she explained to Chris in the car.
Soon, they arrived home, and Gabrielle hurried inside. In the living room, Gloria was present, but Buttons was conspicuously absent.

"I locked him in the bathroom. He was scratching and growling," Gloria claimed, but Gabrielle remained unconvinced. After Gloria departed and her family retired for the night, Gabrielle finally mustered the courage to review the footage. She braced herself for the worst.

In her early twenties, Gabrielle crossed paths with Chris Mayer at a work event. He was a senior consultant at their firm, and she was instantly captivated by him. That evening, they engaged in a lengthy conversation, exchanging numbers before parting ways.
Their budding attraction became an open secret at work. Before long, they embarked on a relationship that blossomed into an engagement.
Sudden Loss
A few years after their wedding, Gabrielle's father, Paul, tragically passed away from a heart attack. The loss deeply affected her mother, who had never been alone before.
In the aftermath, Gabrielle, Chris, and their two young children frequently stayed with Gloria, providing comfort during this difficult time. As life resumed its routine, Gloria made an unexpected decision.
Unexpected News
“I’m adopting a dog from the shelter downtown. Her name is Sally, and she’s one month pregnant,” Gloria shared with her daughter. Gabrielle was caught off guard by the news. “But Mom, I thought you said you hated dogs. And what are you going to do with all of those puppies?” She asked.
But Gloria simply shrugged her shoulders. “It would be nice to have a companion. And I will find homes for the puppies,” Gloria said.
Taking Her Mind Off It
Gabrielle accepted her mother’s explanation. She knew the older woman just needed a way to take her mind off of her father’s death. She drove with her mother the day she went to pick up Sally. She was an adorable Golden Retriever, and Gloria seemed captivated by her.
They took the pregnant dog home, and Gloria instantly gave her everything she needed. But she had no idea what life had in store for her.
Sally
Gabrielle and the children came to visit often, and they all fell in love with Sally. Gabrielle had always been a cat person, but that changed. Sally was friendly and adorable. It was hard not to fall in love. But one day, her mother asked her a tough question.
“You know, the vet says the puppies will come any day now. Perhaps you and the children should take one. Do you want to?” Gloria asked.
Caught Off Guard
Gabrielle was caught off guard. Her life was so busy with Chris and the kids that she never even considered getting a pet. But before she could say anything, her children began begging. “Please, Mom, please,” They begged with their best puppy dog eyes.
How was she supposed to say no to that? She thought about her mother’s offer for a few days, and then, she agreed. They would be taking one of the puppies.
A Sweet Pet
Before Gabrielle knew it, they had a young Golden Retriever named Buttons in the house. He was as sweet as his mother, Sally. Gabrielle had gotten the puppy for her children, but as time passed, she found herself growing more enamored with him.
Before long, she saw him as a part of the family. She was overjoyed to have him around. But one day, the unexpected happened.
Going Out
Gloria had always babysat for Chris and Gabrielle, but since getting the puppy, they hadn’t gone out much until one night. They were invited out to a friend’s engagement party, and as usual, they called Gloria and asked if she could babysit.
Of course, the older woman was more than happy to spend the evening with her grandchildren. But she had no idea what awaited her.
Babysitting
Gloria arrived at their house just before 6 pm that evening. Gabrielle was excited to see her mother. But as soon as she stepped through the door, something weird happened. As soon as the door opened and Gloria stepped inside, Buttons awoke from his nap and ran toward her. He stopped as he stared up at the older woman.
“Oh my! I haven’t seen him since he was a newborn little puppy,” Gloria said and took a step closer to him. But he immediately backed away.
An Odd Encounter
This confused Gabriel. “Oh, that’s weird,” She laughed. “Maybe he just doesn’t remember you,” She shrugged. But she never considered the opposite. Gabrielle and Chris greeted Gloria and the children before they headed out for the evening, but they had no idea what would happen when they got home.
It was a wonderful evening. Gabrielle and Chris spent the night eating and chatting with their close friends. But when they got home, it was absolute chaos.
Not Alone
When they stepped through the front door of their house, they found Gloria in the living room, but she was not alone. Little Buttons was standing in front of her, sniffing at her feet and growling. The old woman seemed terrified. But what had caused this strange behavior?
“I was just petting him. He’s been acting like this all night,” Gloria said, seemingly frightened by the animal. Buttons continued to growl at the old woman.
Calming Down
It wasn’t until Gloria left that he finally calmed down. Gabrielle instantly thought this was suspicious. Buttons had been nothing but sweet to everyone else. She decided to let it go, but the same thing happened again and again. Buttons appeared to be afraid of Gloria. But why?
Gabrielle began wondering what her mother did to deserve it. But when she asked her about it, she claimed that nothing was going on.
More Aggressive
But with every passing visit, Buttons only seemed to become more aggressive toward Gloria. He would jump onto her and growl. Gabrielle was convinced that her mother was doing something to him whenever she wasn’t around. She could see the sadness behind his eyes.
But one day, she decided to get to the bottom of it, with or without her mother’s help. She had the perfect plan in mind.
Long And Hard
Gabrielle thought long and hard about what was going on. Each time she left Gloria alone with Buttons, she grew anxious. She just wanted to see what they got up to when she wasn’t around. That was why she decided to purchase a hidden camera.
She didn’t mention a word of it to her husband, children, or mother. She didn’t want anyone to know that she was onto her.
The Camera
The day Gabrielle bought the camera was the night she had a dinner out with friends. She knew her mother would be there that evening. It was only hours before her mother arrived that she installed the camera between the leaves of one of her indoor plants.
She had the perfect view of the living room on the camera. All she had to do now was attend her dinner party and see what her mother got up to when she thought no one was watching.
A Nervous Wreck
That night, she was a nervous wreck as she left her mother home alone with her two children and Buttons. She wondered if everything back home was alright. But the longer they stayed out, the more she began to worry about her mother being home alone with Buttons.
It was still early in the evening when she asked her husband to take her home. She was starting to fear for both their safety.
He Didn’t Know
Although he didn’t really know what was going on with his wife, Chris could tell that something was seriously bothering her. He decided to take her home, knowing that eventually, she would open up to him. They said goodbye to their friends and drove home.
Before long, they were finally home, and Gabrielle decided to rush inside. When she stepped through the door, Gloria was in the living room, but Buttons was nowhere to be seen.
The Footage
“I closed him in the bathroom. He was scratching at me and growling,” Gloria said. But she didn’t believe her. It wasn’t until after Gloria left and her husband and children went to bed that she decided to look at the footage. But she had no idea how bad it would be.
She sat in front of her laptop and waited for the footage to boot. But as soon as she saw what was going on, a chill ran down her spine.
Going Over
She watched as the dog followed her mother from room to room, almost stalking her. Buttons was constantly trying to sniff at her shoes and growling whenever he could. Something just didn’t seem right to Gabrielle. That was why she decided to take Buttons and drive to her mother’s house.
She didn’t even tell Gloria that she was on her way. She simply drove toward her house and stopped outside.
He Ran Inside
She knocked on her mother’s door, ready to confront her and ask what was going on. But when the door swung open, the unexpected happened. As soon as Gloria opened the front door for her daughter in her pajamas, Buttons jumped out of Gabrielle’s arms.
At first, she thought he was going to attack Gloria, but instead, he sniffed her shoes and then ran into her house. What was going on?
Following Him
Gabrielle and Gloria followed Buttons into the house. They could hear his growling as he ran. But suddenly, he stopped. When they walked into the living room, Buttons was standing in front of Sally, his mother. Then, they watched the unexpected happen.
Suddenly, he jumped toward her and began licking her, sniffing her all over. Gloria and Gabrielle watched in amazement. Suddenly, they understood what was happening.
A Happy Ending
All along, Buttons had been smelling his mother’s scent on Gloria. In an attempt to get closer to her, he constantly insisted on being close to the older woman. Right then and there, Gloria and Gabrielle knew what they had to do. Buttons clearly missed his mother, and they were going to arrange visits.
As the weeks passed and they arranged many visits, Buttons and Sally grew extremely close. In the end, Gabrielle was grateful for the little things in her life.
